Figuring out if your garage door requires repairs can be a tricky process for those that aren’t experts in the repair and maintenance of garage doors. Here’s a guide to determining if your garage door needs repair service, as prepared by the garage door and garage door opener repair experts at LA Garage Doors and Gates.
GARAGE DOOR ELEMENTS TO REGULARLY CHECK UP ON
SPRING SYSTEMS
Make sure that your springs aren’t tearing, bent, or broken. This applies whether your garage utilizes a torsion spring system above the garage door or an extension spring system above the horizontal garage door opener tracks.
ROLLERS
Ensure that the rollers on both sides of the door are degraded, clogged up, or broken.
HORIZONTAL TRACKS
Eyeball the horizontal tracks from the rear of the garage to see if the two horizontal tracks are perfectly parallel and well aligned. You also want to make sure that the triangle shaped steel braces that hold up the tracks have tight bolts that aren’t spinning or loose at all.
HINGES
Check up to see that all the screws holding up the hinges and rollers in place are steady, firm, and not loose.
DOOR LIFTING CABLES
Make sure that the lifting cables on either side of the garage door are perfectly wound around the reels at the top of each vertical track, and make sure that none of the door lifting cables are at all torn or fraying.
GARAGE DOOR OPENER RAIL
Make sure that the carriage assembly that pulls the door open have all their bolts perfectly tightened – this especially applies if the carriage assembly is formed from a multiple 3 piece construction.
GARAGE DOOR OPENER DRIVE
Regardless of whether your garage door operates with a belt driven or chain driven drive, you need to make sure that the garage door opener drive tension is fully balanced. There should be a certain amount of give in both belts and chains, and neither should be stretched taut like a musical instrument string. BUT ALSO, they should be tight to the point of never hanging out of the carriage of the garage door opener.
OUTSIDE WEATHER STRIPPING
Make sure that all the weather strippng located on the exterior framework of your garage is fully attached to the frame with no loose parts or fraying.
