Hearing a popping sound coming from your garage door signals that there are issues at hand that will likely cause fast wear and tear to your garage door opener, wear and tear that will likely cost lots of money to repair. Here’s a guide on what steps to take if you hear popping sounds coming from your garage door, as prepared by the garage door and garage door opener repair experts here at Los Angeles Garage Door and Gate.
INSPECTION OF ROLLERS AND TRACKS
First, open up the garage door and inspect the garage tracks for any rocks, debris, or dust that can catch on. Check that the rollers are round without any flat spots. Try lubricating the rollers with some automotive engine oil. Then close the door and reinspect it.
INSPECTING HINGES
Loose or broken hinges can cause garage doors to pop. Make sure that the hinge’s roller bolt is perfectly perpendicular to its track, and that the hinges are perfectly fastened on to the door. Use a box or socket wrench to make any bolts that are loose tighter, and use a rubber mallet to fix any slight bends in the door panels. Any significant damage should be repaired by a licensed professional garage door repair expert.
OPENER ISSUES?
Disconnect the drive chain from the door and open the door manually – you might need help with this. If the door smoothly opens, you will likely need to have the garage door opener repaired or replaced.
SPRING LUBRICATION
Unlubricated spring coils can get stuck and cause popping sounds. When the garage door is open, use motor oil to lubricate the torsion springs, wiping off excess with a clean cloth. If the issue is still happening after consulting the above steps, you will need a professional garage door repair expert to unwind, lubricate, and rewind all the springs – NEVER ATTEMPT TO UNWIND OR DETACH TORSION SPRINGS YOURSELF!!
