Garage Door Opener Repair in Los Angeles & the San Fernando Valley
Our expert technicians will repair any garage door opener.

Your garage door opener is the hardest-working motor in your home. It lifts a heavy door several times a day, year after year, through Valley heat waves and the occasional power outage. When it stops working, you can be locked out of your garage or stuck with a door that won’t close at night. Metro GDS is a licensed garage door and gate company serving Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley since 2005, and we repair openers 24/7.

Common Garage Door Opener Problems We Fix
The door won’t open or close
If the motor runs but the door doesn’t move, the cause is often a stripped drive gear, a broken trolley, or a disconnected emergency release. If nothing happens at all, it may be a tripped outlet, a failed logic board or a blown capacitor. Sometimes the opener is fine and a broken spring is the real problem, which is why we always check the whole door.
Remote or keypad stopped working
Dead batteries are the easy fix, but range problems, lost programming, a failing receiver or interference from LED bulbs can also stop remotes and wall keypads from working. We reprogram remotes, keypads and car HomeLink buttons, and replace receivers or logic boards when needed.
Loud, grinding or noisy opener
Chain-drive openers are naturally louder, but new grinding, rattling or squealing usually points to a worn gear, a loose chain, dry rails or worn rollers on the door. We tighten, lubricate and replace parts, or recommend a quieter belt-drive or wall-mount opener if your garage is under a bedroom.
Door reverses before it closes
An opener that reverses on its own is doing its safety job, but something is triggering it. Common causes include incorrect close-force or travel limits, an obstruction in the track, or a door that has become hard to move because of worn springs.
Safety sensor problems
The photo-eye sensors near the floor must see each other for the door to close. Sun glare, a bumped bracket, dirt on the lens or a cut wire will cause blinking lights and a door that refuses to close. We realign, clean, rewire or replace sensors and test the auto-reverse system.
Motor hums but nothing happens
A humming motor that won’t turn usually means a failed start capacitor, a stuck motor or a door that is too heavy for the opener because of a broken spring. Running the opener repeatedly in this state can burn out the motor, so stop and call us.
Wi-Fi and smart opener issues
Smart openers like LiftMaster myQ can drop offline after a router change, a firmware update or a weak signal in the garage. We reconnect openers to your network, troubleshoot the app, and add smart control to compatible older openers.
Power outages and battery backup
California law requires battery backup on newly installed openers, and outages do happen across the Valley. If your backup battery no longer holds a charge, the door may not open during an outage. We test and replace backup batteries and show you how to use the manual release safely.
Opener Brands We Commonly Service
We repair and replace openers from most major manufacturers, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Linear, Marantec, Overhead Door and Sommer. That covers chain-drive, belt-drive, screw-drive and wall-mount (jackshaft) models. Metro GDS is an independent service company, so we recommend the right part or opener for your door rather than a single brand.
Repair or Replace Your Opener?
Many opener problems can be repaired with a new gear, sensor, board or remote. Replacement may make more sense when:
- The opener is 15 or more years old and parts are hard to find
- It lacks modern safety sensors or rolling-code security
- The motor is failing and repairs keep repeating
- You want quieter operation, smart-phone control or battery backup
- Your door is heavier or wider than the opener was designed for
Our technician will explain what failed and give you a straight recommendation. Learn more about new units on our garage door openers page.

Garage Door Opener FAQ
How long does a garage door opener last? Most openers last about 10 to 15 years with normal use. Regular maintenance of the door itself, especially springs and rollers, helps the opener last longer.
Why does my garage door open by itself? A stuck wall button, a remote with a shorted button, a neighbor’s remote on the same code, or a failing logic board can cause this. We can clear old codes and reprogram your devices.
Can I use my opener if a spring is broken? No. The opener isn’t designed to lift the door’s full weight. Using it can strip gears, damage the motor or pull the door off track. Call for spring repair first.
Do you install smart and battery-backup openers? Yes. We install Wi-Fi-enabled openers with battery backup and can add smart control to many existing openers.
Do you offer emergency opener repair? Yes. Metro GDS provides 24/7 service across Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. Call (310) 299-0996 any time.
